Posted on Tuesday 30th November 2010 at 8:12 am by SH (Editor)

Police are appealing for information after a burglary in Siston Hill, South Gloucestershire, that left the home-owner seriously ill with stab wounds.

The 49-year-old man is in a stable condition in Frenchay Hospital. He was stabbed with a kitchen knife in the abdomen and suffered cuts to his head and face.

It happened at around 9pm on Tuesday 16th November at a large house in Siston Hill.

The husband and wife owners were disturbed by their dogs barking and found two men in their kitchen. They demanded money, and during a struggle the husband was stabbed. The attackers then ran off.

First Patchway youth meeting held

Posted on Monday 29th November 2010 at 8:17 am by SH (Editor)

The inaugural meeting of Patchway Town Council’s new youth committee was held earlier this month.

The newly formed youth committee met for the first time on Monday 15th November and elected Conservative South Gloucestershire Councillor for Bradley Stoke Central and Stoke Lodge and Patchway Town Councillor, Brian Hopkinson, as Chairman.

Councillors in the town aim to improve the way they work with neighbouring parishes, including Bradley Stoke, to ensure that local young people from across the area are properly catered for.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Hopkinson, who is also the Link Monitoring Officer for youth services on Bradley Stoke Town Council, said:

“I am delighted that we have had our first meeting because establishing this committee is something I have been pushing for over a number of years.”

Setback as Highways Agency objects to proposed new M49 junction

Posted on Friday 26th November 2010 at 8:31 am by SH (Editor)

Campaigners have suffered a setback in achieving their goal of a new M49 junction in Severnside.

The Highways Agency (HA) has lodged its objection to the new motorway junction – a commitment set out in South Gloucestershire Council’s draft Core Strategy as a way of managing future development in the Severnside area.

In its response to the council’s recent Core Strategy consultation – which started in March before the change of government – the HA stated that a new junction would be against its policy, which is a presumption against new accesses to motorways.

But the policy – set out in ‘Department for Transport Circular 02/2007’ – was issued in 2007 by the previous Labour government.

Now that the new government has taken power, campaigners are calling for a review of that policy.

£200 road safety scheme put on hold due to budget freeze (Kingswood)

Posted on Friday 26th November 2010 at 8:24 am by SH (Editor)

Road safety schemes costing as little as a few hundred pounds have been put on hold by South Gloucestershire Council (SGC), according to a group of Labour councillors in Kingswood.

Officials working for Conservative-led  SGC have had to stop working on small road safety schemes because transport chiefs in charge of the Council have frozen their budget. However, junior officials only found out when local councillors asked why certain schemes had not been carried out.

Local councillors for Woodstock in Kingswood, Roger Coales, Andy Perkins and Pat Rooney (Labour) had been campaigning for two years for some Keep Clear markings to be installed at the junction of Fairview Road to improve visibility for drivers turning onto Orchard Vale. However, despite being told in March that the scheme could finally go ahead, the markings had still not been put down at the beginning of November.
