Work to strengthen the bridge at Badminton Station in Acton Turville, which will improve safety for all vehicles and access for agricultural vehicles in the local area, are now complete thanks to a partnership scheme between South Gloucestershire Council and Network Rail.

Cllr Brian Allinson, executive member for planning, transportation and the strategic environment said: “We are committed to ensuring that all the bridge structures in South Gloucestershire are maintained to a high standard and are pleased to have been able to make a contribution to this important scheme with our partners Network Rail. Posted on Wednesday 12th January 2011 at 9:48 pm by SH (Editor)

Campaigners are encouraging residents to have their say on proposals to improve road safety around the Cotswold village of Acton Turville.

South Gloucestershire Council has launched a consultation on making the B4040 and B4039 safer as drivers approach Acton Turville, including a solar-powered and vehicle-activated ‘Bend Ahead’ sign and a reduction in the speed limit from 60mph to either 50mph or 40mph depending on the location.

The proposed scheme has been drawn up in response to the concerns of local residents and campaigners about the nine accidents recorded in the area over the last three years.

Acton Turville school design wins sustainable development award

Posted on Thursday 29th July 2010 at 8:22 am by SH (Editor)

A new school in South Gloucestershire, designed from start to finish by an architect from South Gloucestershire Council, has won a prestigious accolade.

The Local Authority Building Control (LABC) West of England Building Excellence Awards were held last week at Bristol’s Royal Marriott Hotel.

Acton Turville School won Best Sustainable Development for its innovative design and wealth of energy saving features.

The council’s architect, Nicole Muller, took on the brief to design the school and incorporated features such as a biomass boiler, a rainwater harvesting system and a living, sedum roof that slows down rainwater runoff and encourages biodiversity. She was supported by other members of the council’s property services team who provided technical backup.

The striking curved design of the building was complimented by the LABC judges who said:

“This is a well-designed building that satisfies the requirements of 21st century schooling, exceeds current energy saving requirements and provides a valuable multi-use facility for the village community.”
