Transport services scoop prestigious national award

Posted on Thursday 17th December 2009 at 9:43 pm by SH (Editor)

South Gloucestershire Council has won a national award for ensuring that its vehicle fleet provides good value for money and stays on the road serving residents.

The award of Best Performer for Transport Operations and Vehicle Maintenance was announced at the Association of Public Service Excellence (APSE) annual performance conference in Blackpool and received by members of the transport services team.

Cllr Heather Goddard, executive member for community services, said: “Congratulations to the transport services team for winning this prestigious award and national recognition for the excellent work they do.

“The team do a terrific job ensuring that the council’s fleet of vehicles is efficiently run, adheres to the highest environmental standards and provides good value for money.”

Each year transport services submits data to APSE which benchmarks performance to determine how the service is doing compared to hundreds of other councils across the country. After having their performance carefully scrutinised, members of the team attended the evening award ceremony near Blackpool’s famous tower and were presented with a plaque by Strictly Come Dancing’s Flavia Cacace.

Peter Hill, transport services manager, said: “This award is recognition of the hard work, professionalism and dedication of transport services. The team were up against many other local authorities, so to win this award on the national stage is particularly gratifying.”

The transport services team is based in Broad Lane, Yate and at a depot in Almondsbury and consists of 14 team members, including eight mechanics, all dedicated to keeping the council’s fleet of vehicles on the road serving local residents. The team provides a cost-effective vehicle management, maintenance and repair service for council departments and partner organisations.

Councillor welcomes Mall junction works completion

Posted on Monday 7th December 2009 at 8:17 am by SH (Editor)

The ConservativesConservative councillor for Almondsbury, Sheila Cook, has welcomed the completion of a major improvement scheme at the M5 Junction 17 roundabout following a long-running campaign.

Designed to improve traffic flow, the scheme’s completion comes after Cllr Cook met regularly with the Mall and highways engineers to push for action to address commuters’ concerns about the junction during peak periods.

She said:

“I promised residents that I would push for action to improve this junction and so I met with the Mall and traffic engineers regularly to discuss this issue.

I am really pleased this Mall-funded scheme has been completed, along with the much-needed resurfacing of Blackhorse Hill, because this will be of real benefit to local people travelling from the Almondsbury, Easter Compton and Pilning directions.

A combination of the roundabout widening, improvements to the box junction lining, and a review of the existing traffic lights’ timings should allow significantly better flow of local traffic onto the un-signalled part of the junction.”

She added:

“There is still a lot of debate locally about whether the left-hand only lane should be reintroduced from the B4055 onto the M5 northbound and so I am encouraged that traffic engineers will monitor the situation now that improvements have been completed.”
