Councillors win fight for new crossing near sheltered housing scheme

Posted on Monday 28th February 2011 at 8:21 am by SH (Editor)

Councillors in Kingswood are celebrating after a council committee agreed to allocate funding for a zebra crossing outside a sheltered housing scheme.

Blackhorse Court on Blackhorse Road provides supported living for around 19 people with disabilities or learning difficulties. Residents had approached their local councillors about two years ago to see if South Gloucestershire Council would build a zebra crossing across Blackhorse Road as they had found it increasingly difficult to cross this busy road.

Local councillors Roger Coales, Andy Perkins and Pat Rooney (Labour, Woodstock) explained what followed:

“We held an initial site meeting with an official from the Council’s Highways department who identified a suitable location for a zebra crossing. Our problem was that there was no obvious source of funding through the normal Council routes.”

Posted on Thursday 3rd February 2011 at 8:20 am by SH (Editor)

Young people in South Gloucestershire will be making waves on the radio during the half-term break.

They will be broadcasting again as ‘Multi FM’ on 87.7 FM from the Old School youth centre in Kingswood, which is run by South Gloucestershire Council.

The young people will be hosting a mixture of interviews, live music and songs from Monday 21st to Friday 25th February, between noon and 10pm everyday.

This is the fourth year that the young people, aged from 14 to 20-years-old, have run a radio station from the Kingswood-based youth centre. After being granted a licence by Ofcom, they have been hard at work preparing for the week-long broadcast with help and guidance from Phil Gibbons, the station manager at Bristol Community Radio (BCfm), and Matt Thomas, a sound engineer.

Kingswood Library 50th birthday celebrations

Posted on Thursday 27th January 2011 at 12:08 am by SH (Editor)

School children at Kingswood Library (1961)

Staff at Kingswood Library are holding a celebration to mark the library’s 50th birthday and they hope that some of the first people through the door when it first opened in the 1960s will be able to join them.

The High Street library opened to the public in February 1961 and has provided an excellent facility for the community to enjoy ever since. The above photograph of school children was taken around the same time as the official opening on March 16th 1961 – are you in this photograph? If so, library staff are hoping to put names to faces and record memories of the library as it has developed over the years. This will be included in a commemorative diary which will be kept at the library for users old and new to enjoy. And if you recognise yourself in the photo and you would like to attend the celebrations then please get in contact with librarian Julie Barker on 01454 868006.

A 50th anniversary celebration is being held on Saturday 12th February between 10am and 4pm. Cllr Janet Biggin, Chairman of South Gloucestershire Council, will get proceedings under way at 11am by cutting a cake and this will be followed by a programme of live music from the Bristol Wind Band.
