All-weather football pitch at Marlwood School, Alveston

Work has started on a £500K scheme to transform sports facilities at Marlwood School in Alveston, near Thornbury.

A ‘next generation’ all-weather pitch and a natural football pitch will be provided in an effort to encourage sport and healthier lifestyles.

The full-sized football pitches, which can also be used for other sports, will be used mainly by students at the secondary school, but will also be made available for community use outside school hours.

The aim is to complete the new all-weather pitch ready for full use by the school by the end of October.

Once landscaped, the natural pitch will need to be seeded ready for use next year.

The scheme is being funded out of the council’s own resources, following a decision by the Council’s ruling Conservative administration in 2008 to top-up the schools money it receives annually from the government.

Family tributes to son

Posted on Friday 2nd October 2009 at 6:00 pm by SH (Editor)

Tributes have been paid to 17-year-old Christopher Waldron, from Almondsbury, who died under tragic circumstances last night (Thursday, October 1).

Police say his death is not believed to be suspicious. However, in all cases of child deaths, police investigate the circumstances, and are working with their partners and the coroner to establish how he died.

Christopher’s mother Karen said in a statement: “Christopher was a much-loved son and brother to his five brothers and sisters.

“He was bubbly, fun and hard-working. He was a popular boy who did a lot of charity work. He was looking forward to going to university.

“Obviously the family is devastated by his sudden death and asks for privacy at this most difficult time.”

Christopher was a sixth-form pupil at Marlwood School, Alveston.

Headteacher Keith Geary said: “We were very shocked and saddened when we heard the tragic news. Chris was a well-known and well-liked member of the school community. He played a very active role, from helping with drama productions to undertaking fundraising for charity. Our thoughts are with Chris’s family and friends, and we will be doing all that we can to support our students during this difficult time.”
