New signs to stop Kingswood HGV confusion

Posted on Wednesday 12th January 2011 at 9:26 pm by SH (Editor)

Local councillors have welcomed new signs to deter confused HGVs from turning round in a residential street in Kingswood.

HGV traffic leaving the businesses on either side of Bridge Road in Kingswood regularly turn out onto Bridge Road only to find that they are unable to travel up the narrow Manor Road towards Mangotsfield because of a 7.5 tonne weight limit.

In order to turnaround and head towards Station Road, the HGVs then reverse into Fairlyn Drive – something councillors and local people say represents a road safety hazard for residents.

Council consults on accident blackspot plans (Kingswood)

Posted on Saturday 11th December 2010 at 11:00 pm by SH (Editor)

South Gloucestershire Council is consulting on plans to tackle an accident blackspot in Kingswood.

Following a campaign by local councillors on behalf of their residents, the council gave formal approval for road safety measures to be installed at the junction of Orchard Road and Hollow Road. The Council is now consulting on proposals to install two speed tables on Orchard Road, one either side of its junction with Hollow Road.

Woodstock councillors Roger Coales, Andy Perkins and Pat Rooney (Labour) had secured £30,000 from a local area forum so that something could be done to reduce traffic speeds along Orchard Road after a number of accidents occurred close to the junction with Hollow Road. They said:

“We’re pleased that progress is being made with this scheme and that the Council has now published its plans for the junction. We hope that these proposals will meet with residents’ approval.”

£200 road safety scheme put on hold due to budget freeze (Kingswood)

Posted on Friday 26th November 2010 at 8:24 am by SH (Editor)

Road safety schemes costing as little as a few hundred pounds have been put on hold by South Gloucestershire Council (SGC), according to a group of Labour councillors in Kingswood.

Officials working for Conservative-led  SGC have had to stop working on small road safety schemes because transport chiefs in charge of the Council have frozen their budget. However, junior officials only found out when local councillors asked why certain schemes had not been carried out.

Local councillors for Woodstock in Kingswood, Roger Coales, Andy Perkins and Pat Rooney (Labour) had been campaigning for two years for some Keep Clear markings to be installed at the junction of Fairview Road to improve visibility for drivers turning onto Orchard Vale. However, despite being told in March that the scheme could finally go ahead, the markings had still not been put down at the beginning of November.

Child car seat checks on offer at Asda (Cribbs Causeway)

Posted on Saturday 30th October 2010 at 7:43 pm by SH (Editor)

South Gloucestershire Council’s road safety team will be hosting a free educational car seat check clinic with Road Safety GB, the road safety organisation that represents over 200 local authority road safety teams across the UK.

Visit the free clinic at Asda, Cribbs Causeway on Tuesday 2nd November between 10am and 3pm to have your child car seat checked and to receive a copy of the Good Egg Guide, a colourful and informative booklet explaining everything you need to know about child car seats.

The clinic is part of the Good Egg Campaign which is designed to ensure that babies and children are properly restrained whilst travelling in the car, by showing parents and carers the correct way to fit in-car child safety seats. It is important that seats are fitted correctly because:

  • An unrestrained child can be killed in an impact with speeds as low as 5 mph
  • If properly restrained a child is three times less likely to sustain a head injury in a collision than an unrestrained child
