South Glos to receive vital pothole cash

Posted on Saturday 5th March 2011 at 11:09 pm by SH (Editor)

South Gloucestershire Council is expecting to receive around £400,000 to help repair winter damaged roads from the Government.

The Department for Transport has announced a £100 million pot of cash for English councils to help repair potholes formed during the recent freezing weather.

The money will be distributed on a needs basis and South Gloucestershire is likely to receive around £400,000 based on the same formula as last year when a similar scheme was rolled out.

The DfT cash will be used to pay for priority schemes which range from pothole repairs to patching and complete resurfacing projects.

The council has already put extra resources to combat potholes this year with two additional teams to complement the existing three teams working across the district. These teams have already filled around 2,500 potholes since the start of 2011.

On average, South Gloucestershire spends around £500,000 per year on repairing potholes and £200,000 on patching. In recent years, the council has invested an additional £2 million into road surfacing to deal with previously declining road conditions, and this has paid off by reducing the impact of the severe winter weather.

New road surfaces already breaking up (Kingswood)

Posted on Wednesday 26th January 2011 at 12:55 am by SH (Editor)

Two new road surfaces, one of which is only a little over a year old, have started to break-up due to the bad weather.

Gages Road in Kingswood was resurfaced by South Gloucestershire Council in two phases during 2009. A stretch from its junction with Courtney Road to Westons Way was resurfaced in March 2009 and the remainder to its junction with Orchard Vale was completed in November of the same year. Local councillors had undertaken a long-running campaign for the resurfacing of Gages Road as they were concerned about a large number of potholes and broken surfaces throughout the length of the road.

Now, less than two years after the new surfaces have been put down, large patches of cracked tarmac have appeared, a sign that the road is breaking up and potholes are beginning to form.

New Patchway to Cribbs link road opens today

Posted on Monday 6th December 2010 at 8:14 am by SH (Editor)

Opening of Hayes Way, Patchway, Bristol

An important new part of South Gloucestershire’s transport infrastructure opens today (Monday 6th December).

The new road, named ‘Hayes Way’, runs from the A38 near the Royal Mail depot in Patchway to the Mall at Cribbs Causeway.

Cribbs Causeway is often congested during the Christmas period and it is expected this additional link to the shopping centre will help the flow of traffic.

The new road is dual carriageway and runs around the edge of the new Charlton Hayes development for approximately one mile. The road has been built over the past ten months by Bovis Homes as part of planning permission from South Gloucestershire Council for the new Charlton Hayes housing development.

Ring Road ‘priority vehicle lane’ work gets underway

Posted on Wednesday 15th September 2010 at 12:48 am by SH (Editor)

South Gloucestershire Council has started work on expanding the A4174 ring road between Filton and Hambrook.

The work is to install priority vehicle lanes on the A4174 ring road between Coldharbour Lane and the M32 junction in the West and East bound directions. These are additional lanes and will not reduce the amount of lanes to general traffic.

The work is scheduled to minimise the impact on the local road network. At peak times the amount of lanes open to general traffic will stay at two lanes, which will be slightly narrower than usual, the council will restrict wherever possible any works that reduce the number of traffic lanes on the ring road to off peak and overnight working hours. A temporary speed limit of 30mph will also be implemented during the works.

The extra road space that is being proposed to accommodate priority vehicles will also free up room in the general traffic lanes, which will ensure that all road users benefit from these major improvements.
