More ‘No Cold Calling Zones’ launched

Posted on Saturday 26th February 2011 at 9:55 pm by SH (Editor)

Trading standards officers in South Gloucestershire have stepped up their efforts to combat incidents of rogue trading in the area with the introduction of four more ‘No Cold Calling Zones’.

The zones were set up by trading standards at the request of residents and Neighbourhood Watch groups, who have chosen to say ‘no’ to uninvited doorstep callers.

The new zones cover Cooks Close in Bradley Stoke, Simmonds View in Stoke Gifford, Kings Drive in Hanham and Sunningdale, Sandy Lodge, Troon and Hoylake in Yate.

Visitors to the No Cold Calling Zones will see street signs on lamp posts to warn traders, and residents will also be provided with information packs and a door/window sticker to display. The aim is to protect residents as well as empowering them to refuse traders selling at their door, through advice and information.

Residents are encouraged to report breaches of the zones to trading standards and the police as traders who ignore the zones could find themselves being arrested for committing an offence.

New day centre for people with dementia opens in Yate

Posted on Friday 11th February 2011 at 8:11 am by SH (Editor)

A brand new, purpose built day centre for people with dementia has just opened in Yate.

The centre replaces the Woodleaze facility, and is located in the new, multi-million pound Cambrian Green Court extra care housing development.

The new centre has been built as part of the council’s ongoing work to support the increasing number of people with dementia, and their carers. The aim is to help people remain well and as independent as possible within the community.

The new unit is larger, and has more facilities, than the one it has replaced. Increased investment in staffing means that more people can benefit from the support offered at Cambrian Green, with an additional ten places per day.

Yate Hub celebrates its first anniversary

Posted on Friday 4th February 2011 at 8:16 am by SH (Editor)

Young people from the local Youth Forum will join local dignitaries in Yate to celebrate the first anniversary of the Children’s Locality Hub on Monday 7th February.

More than £1.7 million has been invested in the Children’s Hub which provides a range of services to children, young people and their families in this community setting situated next to the library in Yate shopping centre.

From adoption and fostering services, to early years provision, advice on finding a parent and toddler group or information about after school clubs and youth services, it’s all located under one roof. There is also access to an information service advising parents on a raft of issues such as how to choose a school place, accessing free school meals, gaining employment in childcare and finding out about things to do and places of interest for children, young people and their families.

Cllr Sheila Cook, executive member for children and young people, said: “Since opening in February last year, the Hub has proved a popular resource for the community here in Yate and the surrounding areas, and is part of a wider project which includes two other Hubs which are currently being built to serve residents in the Kingswood and Patchway areas.”
