Be Safe Be Seen this winter

South Gloucestershire Council

Primary schools across South Gloucestershire will get the chance to receive the Be Safe Be Seen message as part of a road safety campaign run by the Council this month.

With the clocks going back on 25 October and the nights drawing in, the Council’s road safety team is reaching out to local primary schools with a clear message: Be Safe Be Seen.

The team will be promoting the campaign to primary schools until Friday 6 November to encourage pupils to wear something bright and take extra care when crossing the road as the nights draw in. The team is offering an assembly to schools followed by the sale of fluorescent and reflective safety material to children and parents.

Councillor Brian Allinson, executive member for planning, transport and strategic environment, said: “With the darker evenings on their way it is very important that our young people are kept as safe as possible. The Be Safe Be Seen campaign emphasises the importance to children of being highly visible and ensuring that they follow sensible safety advice when they’re out and about.”

The Be Safe Be Seen key messages are:

  • Be bright morning or night
  • Make sure you can be easily seen, especially at night, on dark days and in bad weather
  • Bright or fluorescent clothes show up best by day, especially in dull or misty weather
  • By night, reflective material is best and shows up in car headlights – fluorescent clothing doesn’t work after dark. Reflective tape can be put on clothing, school bags and equipment
  • It is against the law to cycle at night without a white front light, a red back light and a red reflector at the back, so make sure all bikes are properly equipped and working
  • Cross the road at the safest place possible.
  • Use the Green Cross Code: Stop, Look, Listen
  • If you are out at night, choose routes that are well-lit by streetlights and cross at well-lit places
