South Gloucestershire police are warning moped riders to lock up following the arrest of three young men for moped theft.
In the early hours of Wednesday 22nd September patrolling officers spotted a Piaggio NRG moped which had been stolen from Staple Hill. The bike was found abandoned near the cycle track at Mangotsfield and officers arrested three young men nearby.
Two 15-year-old boys from Bristol have been charged with taking a vehicle without consent and are due before Northavon Youth Court on Tuesday 19th October.
A 16-year-old man, also from Bristol, was released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Community Safety Inspector Gerry Treacy said: “Thieves have noticed that people seem to be very careful about securing their bikes when out and about.
“They’ll use good quality locks in car parks but don’t worry so much at home. People really should use a strong D-lock or chain to secure their bike to an anchor plate, and not just rely on the steering lock when parking outside their house.
“If you can, park it in a secure shed or garage – but even in an outbuilding you should chain it to something solid.”
